Easter Activities To Make With Children
As the end of term approaches, why not gather some simple supplies and stitch up an Easter Extravaganza over the holidays?
Whether or not Easter is a holiday which you celebrate, any children in your immediate or wider family will likely be on their end-of-term break very soon. Two weeks away from school is welcomed by many children, but it can be a challenge for parents and families to keep them entertained. Days out are often a considerable expense, and in preparation for the inevitable rainy day or two, it’s always useful to have a couple of crafting ideas up your sleeve.
Easter Bunting
Bunting is a great way to brighten up a space either indoors or outside. It is simple to make and a great activity to get children of all ages involved in. We have made our bunting from fabric, but the same effect can be achieved using wrapping paper or wallpaper. Make a triangular template for the children to draw around and then cut out. Use tape or glue to attach the flags to ribbon or string and hang them up for all to see!
If you are using fabric, follow the instructions below.
Cut 2 triangles per flag and stitch them together, right sides facing, leaving an opening in the top edge to allow for turning.
Turn through and press each flag, folding in the raw edges of the opening and pushing out the corners.
Pin and then stitch to a length of ribbon or decorative trim. We used a fun pompom ribbon from our local haberdashery.
Of course, you can always use coloured paper cut into triangles, or get the kids to draw their own designs too!
We have bunting kits available which contain everything you need to make your own fabric bunting available in our shop, just click on the link!
Easter Bean Bags
These little bean bags can be decorated to create cute animals which children will love. They are simple to make using leftover fabric or felt as we have here, and the kids will have lots of fun creating faces for their characters which can be stitched or glued in place. Filled with dried rice or beans, these would also make fun decorations around the home. Hide them for a treasure hunt, draw a grid on paper to play noughts and crosses, or teach yourself to juggle! They would also make fun place markers on the table for a family get-together.
This pattern is based on the Beatrix Pattern Weights digital pattern which is available via the link below. Simply add features from felt or stitching to create your own characters!
Treat Holder
Not everyone is a chocaholic, so we have made a pretty holder for a small egg or chocolate which also doubles up as a pretty decoration! Using small pieces of fabric, you will likely have everything to make this in amongst your sewing supplies.
Cut out 3 oval shapes from your chosen fabric. Fold 1 in half and topstitch along the straight edge. Pin this to the bottom of one of the ovals matching the edges together, and a loop of ribbon to the top of the oval. Match the ribbon ends with the edge of the fabric allowing the ribbon to hand down on top of the oval.
Place the remaining oval face down on top and stitch all around the shape leaving a small gap for turning.
Turn through and press well, folding the raw edges at the opening to the inside.
Topstitch around the whole shape, closing the opening as you stitch. Add your chosen chocolate and hang it up, ready to gift!
We hope that you enjoy making these fun sewing projects, or use them as starting points to create your own ideas.
