What Are You Going to Make Next?

The World Cup may be over, but I have a feeling your next project is already calling your name…

Well... we’ve reached the final whistle! Are you glad, or have you got end-of-tournament-blues?

When I first came up with the idea for One Match One Make, I honestly thought it would just be a fun way to make the most of those pockets of time while the football was on. You know, those times when the family are engrossed in the game, but you don’t want to stare at the TV for 90 minutes and are itching to make something?

Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about finding time to sew, rescuing unfinished projects, celebrating small wins and building a habit that fits around real life.

And somewhere along the way, something rather lovely happened.

I stopped waiting for a free afternoon, for the “right” project, waiting for perfect. Instead, I started making. Little and often, and I don’t think I’ll be going back.

Sewing Has a Funny Way of Doing That

Have you ever noticed that finishing one project doesn’t make you want a rest? It usually makes you want to start another one! You tidy away the last few threads... stand back and admire your finished make... and before you’ve even put the scissors away you’re already thinking... “I wonder if I could make one in linen?” “I’ve got some fabric that would be perfect for another one...” “Ooh... what if I changed the pockets?” Sound familiar?

I don’t think sewists ever really run out of ideas. We simply collect them. Sometimes in notebooks. Sometimes on Pinterest. Sometimes in the fabric cupboard... (OK, usually in the fabric cupboard.)

Every Project Leaves Something Behind

Of course, every finished project leaves you with something tangible: a bag, a skirt, a quilt, a cushion - whatever you’ve been making. But I think it leaves something else too. Confidence. The confidence to try a new zip, to attempt a different fabric, to change a pattern, to trust your instincts. Every project quietly teaches us something that we carry into the next one. And that’s one of the reasons I love making things. There’s always another opportunity to learn.

Your Sewing Style Is Yours

One of the nicest things about sewing is that there isn’t a finish line. There isn’t a perfect number of projects to complete. There isn’t a right speed either. Some people finish a project every weekend, while others take months. Some love following patterns exactly, but some just can’t resist adding a pocket or changing the straps! Some have beautifully organised sewing rooms, and some have fabric draped over every available chair. (I’m not naming names!)

The point is... There’s room for all of us. The joy isn’t in sewing the fastest. It’s in making something that’s uniquely yours.

So... What’s Next?

Now that the World Cup is over, I have a question for you.

Not... “What have you finished?” But... What are you excited to make next? Maybe it’s something you’ve been planning for months. Maybe it’s a Christmas gift. Maybe it’s finally using that fabric you’ve been saving because it felt “too nice.”(If there’s one thing this challenge has taught me, it’s that beautiful fabric deserves to become something beautiful.)

Whatever it is... I hope you start. And once you start, I hope you continue.
