There’s something I love about having a project on the go. So much so that it’s rarely just one project… That stage where an idea is beginning to take shape, fabric is spread across the table (and into the room beyond), and you’re not quite sure yet whether everything is going to work as you’d imagined!
At the moment, my sewing table is occupied by, amongst other things, a prototype for a 3D fabric advent calendar. I’m working on a Christmas tree design, formed into a cone, with little bags to hold the treats and surprises that make an advent calendar so much fun. I’ve been thinking about the shape, the construction and how to turn a flat piece of fabric into something that stands up beautifully. Ultimately, I will make this into a pattern, so one of the most important things for me is to ensure that it can be achieved by anyone wanting to give it a go.
Of course, there’s a world of difference between imagining something in your head and actually making it. That’s where the prototypes come in! A first attempt is perhaps more about discovering what doesn’t work than it is about getting things right. It can often be a slow and frustrating process. Sometimes a small adjustment makes all the difference and provides that ‘lightbulb moment’; other times, it’s back to the drawing board - again.
I enjoy this part of designing, even when it takes a few attempts to get there. There’s a particular satisfaction in solving a practical problem and seeing an idea gradually evolve into something real.
With Christmas approaching (apologies, I know we are still in October), my thoughts are naturally turning to seasonal sewing and what we can make to bring a little extra magic to the home.
But enough of what’s happening on my sewing table. I’d really love to know what’s happening on yours.
Are you working on Christmas gifts, making something for your home, tackling a project that’s been waiting patiently in your sewing basket, or simply sewing something because you fancy it?
It doesn’t have to be a finished masterpiece. Sometimes the most interesting projects are the ones still taking shape.
Tell me in the comments. What’s on your sewing table at the moment? I’d love to hear what you’re making.
Happy sewing!
Suzanne
